How is RWA different from a stablecoin? Is a stablecoin an RWA?
Short answerCategory:Definitions
Stablecoins are a subset of RWA, but the two are not interchangeable. Fiat-backed stablecoins whose reserves are USD deposits or short-term treasuries do hold real-world assets and count as RWA in the broad sense; algorithmic or unbacked stablecoins hold no off-chain asset and are not RWA. The key difference is who earns the yield: stablecoin holders generally do not receive interest on reserves, while holders of tokenized treasuries or money-market funds do.
Evidence and detail
- One test only: is there an off-chain reserve, who custodies it, and is it disclosed and audited regularly?
- Yield-bearing stablecoins (USYC, USDY) sit in between — backed by assets with yield passed to holders, so they get counted in both categories.
- Folding stablecoin market cap into "RWA market size" is a common inflation of the number; strip it out before comparing sizes.
